This
week I watched two different news stories about people who have had a
huge impact on the world.
The
media tends to focus on the negative. When we see something positive,
maybe we should take note. Many times we can see the hand of God.
Sir
Nicholas Winton
In
the months before WW2, Nicholas Winton spent a two weeks vacation in
Czechoslovakia that saved the lives of 669 children. With little
support from any government or organizations, he stepped up and did
what he could do.
His
work went almost unnoticed because he never talked about it. He never
looked for fame because he was just doing the right thing. Even at
over 100 years old, he is still building nursing homes and taking
care of people who need help.
Mitch
Albom, a sports writer, connected with his high school coach who was
battling a terminal illness. He spent every Tuesday visiting him.
Through that encounter he wrote the best selling book, “Tuesdays
with Maurie.” A
simple act of kindness became a huge success story. But the best part
is what he has been doing behind the scenes with his fortune since
then.
In
the acknowledgements of his latest book, Mitch Albom writes, “Finally
and firstly, anything created by my heart or my hand is from God, by
God, through God and with God.” He doesn't want credit for what God
is doing through his life.
You
might think that you would do something great if you just had the
resources. But if you listen to these two stories you will notice
that these men just did what they could with the resources that they
had available, a vacation and some Tuesday afternoons. They didn't
wait until there was an easy way, they just live their lives doing
what they can with what they have.
You
might think you can't make a real difference. 669 was just a small
portion of the children who needed saving in Czechoslovakia. But its
been estimated that there are over 15,000 descendants of that 669. Mr
Albom hasn't lived long enough to see the lasting effects of the
children and homeless families that he is helping.
God tends to multiply what we do. We have to add something to the
equation when we get the chance. 0 x 0 = 0.
We see a story that exemplifies this in John 6:6 when a little boy gave up his lunch to feed others. Over 5000 were fed that day.
What
if we could all live our lives like Christ. What if we all did what
we could? What if we didn't wait? Me x God x you x God x someone you
inspire.... = infinity.
